About Us
The Mills Gymnastics USA mission is to develop healthy, happy, confident, and responsible children.
We believe that every child must be
- Kept safe from harm
- Valued as an individual
- Must be happy to be truly healthy
- Inspired to become a responsible leader
- Encouraged to care about and help others
- Taught the value of knowledge, challenge, hard work and determination
We accomplish this through gymnastics, tumbling and trampoline instruction by well trained, enthusiastic coaches. We believe that this requires a safe, clean and fun facility that the whole family can enjoy. Our programs are designed specifically to be age and skill appropriate.
Although we are very good at teaching skills, that is secondary to the development of each child in our charge. Our goal is to help each child become healthier and more successful. Responsibility, tenacity, passion, focus and attention to detail are what we really teach the children entrusted to us each day. These are the ‘skills’ that last a lifetime.
We are humbled and we thank you for the trust you exhibit by placing your child with us. Everyday we look for more and better ways to give you and your child the greatest experience possible at Mills Gymnastics USA. Building happy confident kids is not just a clever tag line to us; it is what we live for.
Mills Gymnastics Bullying/Discipline Policy
Mills Gymnastics USA defines bullying as:
A harmful pattern of behavior that is purposeful and intentionally threatening to another. This includes but is not limited to verbal and physical behaviors that interfere with the gym’s ability to facilitate activities. Bullying will not be tolerated at the gym.
Bully Prevention Plan
- Create a happy, supportive, and safe environment.
- Create rules and policies and educate kids/staff on these.
- Train staff to recognize signs of bullying and what to do if it happens.
- Encourage kids to speak up.
- Eliminate opportunities for bullying to happen (no kids alone together, kids placed in age appropriate groups, staff to exhibit exemplary behavior)
If Bullying Occurs
- Immediate Intervention, lead staff notified.
- Separate the kids involved and make sure everyone is safe.
- Meet any immediate medical or mental health needs.
- Stay calm and reassure all kids involved or witness to incident(s).
- Communicate situation to parents/guardians of kids involved.
- Follow steps in Mills Discipline policy.
- Immediate dismissal from the gym will be incurred in extreme situations.
Discipline Policy
Mills Gymnastics USA uses class, open gym, camp, etc. to teach children the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Children are expected to follow behavior guidelines and to interact appropriately while at the gym. Rules are built to maintain respect for self, others, and Mills Gymnastics property. We value mistakes as learning opportunities and give children reminders of the rules and explanation of why the rules are important. We will guide the children to resolve conflicts, and encourage optimal behavior. Children will be given the opportunity to share their feelings and frustration with an attentive adult.
In the event of unacceptable behaviors, we will take the following actions:
- A gym strike report will be filled out and shared with the parent/guardian
- The strike report is designed to give parents a brief description in a written report format of any unacceptable behaviors. The strike reports are used only after the child has had multiple warnings/chances to correct their behavior.
- The strike reports should be taken seriously, at home discussions with your child should take place to help improve behavior.
- If a child receives 3 or more strike reports within a 6 month time, a conference will be held with the gym director and the parents/guardian as a last chance to correct any unwanted behaviors.
- Additional resources may be provided or suggested for the family.
- Temporary or Permanent suspension from the gym programs will occur if behavior does not immediately and permanently improve after director/parent meeting.
SUSPENSION POLICY
If in our judgement, any child’s behavior places the well being of themselves or others at risk of injury we will act quickly and decisively to resolve the situation.
Some examples of situations when it may be necessary to remove or suspend a child from our program:
- A child appears to be a danger to himself, other children, or staff.
- A child is unable to participate safely in our programing without a dedicated 1:1 aide. 1:1 aides MAY be offered, based on availability, at the parent’s expense.
- Director determines that continued attendance could be harmful to or not in the best interest of the child.
- The child and/or parents consistently ignore camp rules/policies.
- A parent/guardian is disrespectful to any of Mills Gymnastics USA employees/staff.
Immediate Suspension
In extreme situations, the immediate removal of a child from the camp may be necessary. Reasons may include health and/or safety issues for the child, the staff, or other children, as well as the following:
- Failure to pay account balance.
- A parent/guardian is physically or verbally abusive to staff, children, or anyone else at the facility.
- The child is a safety threat to others, himself, or staff. This includes but is not limited to fighting, striking others, biting, wandering, running away from program.
- A parent/guardian fails to abide by gym policies.
- The child’s needs are not being met in our gym setting/program.
- Using profanity, vulgarity, or obscenity on a frequent basis.
- Acting in a lewd manner.
- Inappropriate attire.
- Possession or use of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, fireworks, firearms, or explosives.
- Inappropriate touching of self or others.
- Any other additional behavior that disrupts the daily operations of the gym, classes, or programming.
Our History
On August 29, 1994, Mills Gymnastics USA opened for its first day of classes with 224 students and six instructors, including Pete and Lanny. As the old cliché goes, the rest is history. The gym grew so fast Lanny was forced to retire from teaching two years earlier than planned because his “hobby” had grown so large! After seven years, the original 9600 square foot building in Brownstown was busting at the seams with 796 kids per week performing gymnastics, and a new, larger location in Southgate opened.
Now, after 20 years in business, thousands of Downriver community children have experienced the joy and challenge of gymnastics and related activity, improving their physical and mental well-being because of the dreams, dedication, love and hard work of so many associated with this company. All of you who have been with us for any part of this journey, whether still with us or are now elsewhere should be very proud of what you have helped build.
Why Gymnastics?
The parent who states that they think “…gymnastics would probably be good for their child” might be surprised to know just how good it is. With pediatric obesity at an epidemic level of 13% of children and adolescents in the United States, getting children away from the television or computer games and into the gym is a terrific first step toward a healthy lifestyle. The researchers at the Centers for Disease Control report that youth who undertake lifestyle exercise programs that increase physical activity, reduce the intake of high-caloric foods and involve parents have the best chance of preventing and reducing obesity over the long-term. Gymnastics is perhaps one of the most comprehensive “lifestyle exercise programs” available to children, incorporating strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and discipline. Additionally, gymnastics can help children to build a positive self image and can promote high self esteem.
Benefits:
Physical Benefits
Gymnastics can endow children with great physical benefits. From muscle strength and balance to healthy bones and flexibility, gymnastics provides an exciting option for parents who know the value of a full body workout. Gymnastics can also improve posture, coordination, and helps to build strong and lean muscles.
Non-Physical Benefits
Great gymnastics clubs (like Mills Gymnastics) that provide stimulating, age-appropriate curriculum and terrific instructors who care about their students, can help children yield other important non-physical benefits from gymnastics. Cognitive, social, and psychosocial benefits might not be as obvious as a toned muscle, but there is no question that they are there. There are a number of non-physical benefits of gymnastics, including:
- Cognitive benefits
- Improved social skills
- Reduced risky behavior
- Confidence
- Character
